In the UK, 38% of habitual gamblers are gambling more than they were before the outbreak.

According to recent research from UK pricing comparison site NerdWallet, Brits are now gambling more than they were before Covid.

NerdWallet conducted research for this year's Safer Gambling Awareness Week (1-7 November) and found that nearly two-fifths of regular gamblers, defined as those who gamble at least once a month, had seen their gambling grow as a result of the epidemic.

This number increased even higher for those who bet on a daily basis, with 63 percent of those who gamble every day reporting an increase in their gambling time, and according to the website's study, there are hints that this trend may continue.

Despite the removal of several public health measures, 62 percent of respondents indicated their gambling had stayed the same, while 12 percent claimed their gambling had increased.

"With a lack of distraction over the tough months of lockdown, it appears that people have found it much harder to manage their gambling, and the habits developed over the last 18 or so months have been difficult to unwind even as the UK opens up," said Connor Campbell, a personal finance expert at NerdWallet.

However, many people intended to cut down on their gaming time, with 43 percent of those who bet at least once a month expressing this desire, and 57 percent of regular gamblers expressing the same desire – but 42 percent claiming they had no clue how to go about it.

"It testifies to the ongoing relevance of Safer Gambling Awareness Week that so many people want to minimize their gambling but don't know how to utilize or are entirely unaware of the resources available to help them," Campbell stated.

“This is especially true at a time when people will be under financial stress from all sides, whether it's rising energy expenses, rising food prices, or the imminent national insurance increase.”
